Pagepurr reads your documents aloud. It is built so that your documents and what you do with them stay with you.
What stays on your device
Without signing in, everything stays in your browser on your device: the documents you open, your reading positions, highlights, notes, bookmarks and settings. Nothing is sent to us. Reading aloud, recognising text in pictures and making summaries all happen on your device.
If you turn on sync with Google Drive
Sync is optional. If you sign in with Google:
- The documents you open in Pagepurr, and your reading positions, highlights, notes and bookmarks for them, are saved in a folder called "Pagepurr" in your own Google Drive, so your other devices can fetch them.
- Pagepurr asks Google for one permission only: to see and manage the files it created itself in your Drive. It cannot see any other file in your Drive.
- The data goes directly between your browser and your Google Drive. It never passes through, and is never stored on, a server of ours. We cannot see your files, your email address or anything else in your Google account.
- We do not share, sell or transfer this data to anyone, and we do not use it for advertising or to train AI models.
- You can stop at any time: choose "Stop syncing on this device" in the app, delete the "Pagepurr" folder in your Drive, and remove Pagepurr's access at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Pagepurr's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Other services the app contacts
- Vercel hosts the app's files. Like any web host, it sees the technical details of a visit (such as IP address and browser type).
- Hugging Face: the first time you use a natural or lifelike on-device voice, the voice model is downloaded from there. No document text is sent: the speech is made on your device.
- Wiktionary (Wikimedia Foundation): when you ask for the meaning of a word, that word alone is sent to look it up.
- Web articles: when you open a link, the app's server on Vercel fetches that page for you and hands it back; nothing is kept there.
- jsDelivr: the first time you recognise text in a language other than English, that language's data file is downloaded from there. No document content is sent.
